USD Theatre to premiere The Rocky Horror Show

VERMILLION, S.D. -- The University of South Dakota Department of Theatre brings a cult classic to the stage, “The Rocky Horror Show,” with five performances scheduled April 22-23 and April 25 at 7:30 p.m., and April 24-25 at midnight in the Wayne S. Knutson Theatre of the Warren M. Lee Center for the Fine Arts.

This rock musical sensation has played in London, Los Angeles and Broadway and has finally made its way to South Dakota where it will receive its premiere production at The U.  "Rocky Horror" has endured constant worldwide production since its inception in 1973 and is the basis for the 1975 film classic “The Rocky Horror Picture Show.” The stage show, which has music and lyrics by Richard O'Brien, was revived on Broadway in 2000 and was nominated for multiple Tony Awards.

The story centers upon a newly engaged couple, Brad (Ty Hudson of South Sioux City, Neb.) and Janet (Katie Henrichson of Sioux Falls, S.D.) who, due to a storm and a flat tire, encounter Frank-N-Furter (Miles Brindley of Belle Fourche, S.D.), a transsexual alien from the planet Transylvania.  Frank-N-Furter, along with his man-servant Riff-Raff (Kevin Kelly of Aberdeen, S.D.) and maid Magenta (Krysta Dziak of Helena, Mont.) take the couple on a wild and hilarious science-fiction journey with a large and diverse cast of characters over the course of an evening. This evening includes creation of a man, death of a past lover, ray-guns, high heels and lots of song.  Audience members are welcome to participate by dressing up in the costume of their favorite character.  Bags containing props will be available for $3 in the lobby prior to each performance.

The artistic team of "The Rocky Horror Show" features a mix of faculty and students.  Faculty members Charlotte Guyette, Bruce Earnest, Patricia Downey and Linda Scribner serve as stage director, music director, choreographer, and costume designer, respectively, while graduate students Karl Hermanson (set designer), Jonathan Hart (lighting) and Jay Seevers (sound) round out the production.

Tickets are $12 for adults, $7 for youths (K-12) and non-USD students, and $5 for USD students with current ID’s.  The box office opens Tuesday, April 14 from noon to 5 p.m. weekdays; and noon to curtain on days of performance.  Tickets can be reserved by calling (605) 677-5400 or online at www.usd.edu/cfa/Theatre . "The Rocky Horror Show" contains mature themes and is not recommended for children.
