USD students showcase multitude of artwork during May exhibit

VERMILLION, S.D. -- Jade Somsen, Lyndsi Price, Criscel Miske, Brooke Hiemstra, Michael Gordon and Isaura Nino, all students at The University of South Dakota, will showcase a multitude of artwork of different disciplines and media during an exhibition at the John A. Day Gallery of the Warren M. Lee Center for the Fine Arts, May 3-7.

Somsen, daughter of Leon and Connie Somsen, is a fine arts major with an emphasis in graphic design from Yankton, S.D. Somsen works with simplistic design conveying the thought of emotions into her work. Price, the daughter of Geoffrey Price and Debbie Jo Vondrak of Le Mars, Iowa, is a fine arts student with an emphasis in photography. She works primarily with digital media while Miske, daughter of Craig Miske, is a fine arts major with an emphasis in graphic design from Rapid City, S.D. After much exploration into the marketing direction for the past year, Miske challenged herself to create pieces using a variety of media to enhance her visual expression.

Hiemstra, a fine arts student with an emphasis in photography, is from Bartlesville, Okla. The daughter of Craig and Kathy Hiemstra, she works with a variety of photographic processes, including traditional and digital, to explore the natural environment and its connection to human beings. Gordon, son of Jeff and Ila Gordon, is a fine arts major with an emphasis in printmaking from Sioux Falls, S.D. Gordon uses silkscreen to create works exploring the wonder of the natural world that also instills a sense of history, encouraging the viewer to further investigate. Nino, the daughter of Pedro and Elena Nino, is an art education major with an emphasis in photography from Yankton, S.D.

A reception for all six student artists is scheduled for Friday, May 7 from 7 to 9 p.m. in the John A. Day Gallery. The gallery is free to the public and is open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays and from 1 to 5 p.m. on weekends.
