Farber statue is backdrop for unique USD Mock Trial Team fundraiser

VERMILLION, S.D. -- For $15, students, faculty, alumni and friends of the University of South Dakota can enjoy a fun way to keep track of 2013 through the eyes of a unique campus landmark.

The University of South Dakota Mock Trial Team’s William O. “Doc” Farber 2013 Statue Calendar shows photos of the Farber statue in unique situations and clothing, including Valentine’s Day flair or highlighting USD’s rivalry with South Dakota State University. The calendar was created by USD Creative Services and student members of the mock trial team, who spent time last fall preparing the props and taking photos of the decorated statue. All proceeds from calendar sales will be used to support a scholarship for a USD Mock Trial student. An image of the calendar is available for download at www.usd.edu/press/news/images/releases/FarberStatue_2013Calendar.jpg.

Farber, who died March 24, 2007 at the age of 96, served as chairman of the USD Department of Political Science for 38 years. He retired from teaching at USD full-time in 1976 but devoted most of his life to public service. In 1951, Farber established the state’s Legislative Research Council to provide state legislators access to unbiased research and information on important topics. The council continues today as the legislature’s non-partisan research staff. The life-sized statue of Farber, located on the terrace of Dakota Hall, was dedicated on campus in 2002 in recognition of his lifelong leadership and accomplishments for both USD and the state.
