VERMILLION, S.D. -- The South Dakota Board of Regents this week recognized student organizations at the University of South Dakota for their outstanding academic, community, and organizational work.
These USD student groups were given special regents’ awards:
Award for Academic Excellence – The Student Organization of the American Dental Hygiene Association introduces students to the professional side of dental hygiene, both clinically and as leaders within the profession. The group stresses oral hygiene and dental education within the community, by supporting campus organizations and volunteering their time to worthy causes. Members must be enrolled in the USD dental hygiene program.

All USD students must go through an interview process to become a SERVE member. Among the organizations supported by SERVE are Big Pal/Little Pal, Adopt-A-Grandparent, Adopt-A-School, Cultural Connections, the Heroes program, and Variations of Volunteering (VOV).
Award for Organizational Leadership – Encouraging active citizenship, AWOL (Alternative Week of Off-Campus Learning) immerses students in educational service-learning experiences and trips through exposure to diverse social issues and topics. Participants engage in alternative service programs on their spring break and during weekends, as well as through service activities during National Days of Service, volunteerism at the Hunger Banquet, and a variety of fundraising efforts.
