Welcome to USD's Carbon Task Force.
|
The Carbon Task Force is concerned with making the University of South Dakota a carbon-neutral university. By coordination of efforts among students, faculty, and administration at the university, our goal is to assess the needs of USD in its transition to carbon-neutrality, research the potential and effectiveness of methods available, and to provide the university with an effective and affordable blueprint in meeting this goal. The group began its work in the spring of 2007.
Our work so far Starting out in spring of 2007, the steering committee was formed with six students, three faculty members, and three administrators from USD. We determined the goals of our group, and decided on a course of action for the months ahead.
Throughout the summer and into fall of 2007, forming into two subcommittees, the group began work in two important directions. One subcommittee looked at what other institutions have been doing in their efforts to reach carbon-neutrality. The other collected data from USD's own resource usage and compiled this data to provide knowledge of which areas USD needs improvement.
Having provided the results of research completed by the two subcommittees, the task force is now working towards identifying areas of importance to USD, as well as a range of possible options to deal with these areas. We plan to soon have proposals for improvement ready to offer to the university.
The April 2008 report In April the task force presented the results of its work, assessing USD's carbon situation and offering recommendations on room for improvement. Take a look: April 2008 Report
