Schatzkammer is a professional journal intended primarily for teachers of German language, literature, and culture in primary and secondary schools and undergraduate college classes in North America. It is designed to offer this community of teachers support and encouragement, practical information about teaching and program development, and a forum for sharing experience, information, and research with colleagues. While other journals appropriately concentrate on specialized literary topics and technical linguistic and pedagogical research, Schatzkammer presents materials of general interest to German teachers of all levels, including practical, personal, and creative items as well as articles based on rigorous research. The objective of the journal is to enhance the success of German teachers and in doing so to promote German studies, recognizing their practical value in international communication and their importance as an integral part of our liberal arts traditions.
Schatzkammer is a journal for teachers of German by teachers of German in primary and secondary schools and undergraduate college classes. It was founded in 1975 and for its first nine years was published annually. Since 1984, it has been publish ed bi-annually, during each fall and spring semester. Schatzkammer features essays, reports, and news items on language, pedagogy, literature, and Landeskunde of the German-speaking countries. Included are reference materials, reviews of current books and computer software, as well as contributions on German-Americana, films and videos.
Schatzkammer also publishes special issues compiled and introduced by specialists in the field. Past issues of this kind have dealt with Berlin, Women in Recent German Films, Kurt Tucholsky, and Austria. Schatzkammer provides school teachers with practical information especially geared to classroom application, such as "Jugendsprache", "Jetzt ist Unterricht", and the very popular Source List (Lehrerhilfe) embraces a variety of topics such as Humor, Landeskunde, In der Kürze liegt die Würze, Studenten experimentieren, Chronik, travel information, and useful addresses of various organizations both here and abroad.
