Online Certificates in Addiction Studies

The University of South Dakota is pleased to offer a number of Addiction Studies (ADS) programs and courses in a convenient online format, allowing students to study anytime, anywhere. The Addiction Studies programs at USD focus on science-based addiction education enabling professionals to provide the highest quality addiction counseling to individuals dealing with substance abuse or addiction.

Undergraduate Certificate in Addiction Studies

This 27 credit hour program focuses on science-based addiction education so the professional can provide the highest quality addiction counseling to individuals dealing with substance abuse or addiction. Participants should contact their State Certifying Body to assure courses meet certification. Requirements may differ from state to state. For details regarding South Dakota's certification standards, please refer to the Standards Manual of the South Dakota Board of Addiction and Prevention Professional (BAPP). If you are not a South Dakota resident, please contact your state certifying body to ensure courses meet certification/licensure requirements. Please check with your certifying body regarding ability for degree-seeking students to complete course requirements in shadowing and internship opportunities.

Graduate Certificate in Addiction Studies

The Online Graduate Certificate in Addiction Studies is an innovative 15 credit hour program that prepares addiction professionals to meet the increasingly complex needs of alcohol/drug patients, as well as the increasing educational and professional expectations of employers. The program focuses on science-based addiction education enabling professionals to provide the highest quality addiction counseling to individuals dealing with substance abuse or addiction. The completion of this certificate program prepares addiction professionals to meet fifteen (15) of the twenty-seven (27) credit hours required for state alcohol/drug certification at level III. Participants should contact their State Certifying Body to assure courses meet certification as requirements may differ from state to state. For details regarding South Dakota's certification standards, please refer to the Standards Manual of the South Dakota Board of Addiction and Prevention Professional (BAPP).

The ADS Department is accredited through the National Addiction Studies Accreditation Commission (NASAC).
*Please note that prior to admission, all Undergraduate and Graduate Certificate in ADS students must complete a background check. Clearance can be completed by Verified Credentials, Inc. Please follow the instructions as directed on their website: Verified Credentials, Inc. You will be required to provide identifying information as well as a payment source. Results will be certified and returned to you as well as the ADS department.

  3. Criminal background check before second class
  4. Official high school transcript or GED
  5. ACT or SAT scores (not required if applicant is over 24)
  6. Non-refundable application fee of $20 made payable to USD

Please note: Additional requirements exist for transfer students.

  2. Successful completion of a Bachelor's degree as verified by official transcripts from all institutions of higher learning attended.
  3. Cumulative undergraduate GPA of 2.7 or higher (on a 4.0 scale)
  4. Statement of Purpose
  5. A criminal background check is required prior to admission.
