The Ron L. Moyer One-Act Festival is USD’s popular annual festival of short plays directed by graduate and advanced undergraduate directing students. This year, three of the four works were written by students at USD, and one was written by a playwright from Sioux City, Iowa.

Johanna Ziegler, a junior creative writing major, wrote two of the one-acts for this year. Her works are titled “Unfortunately, Unbearably, Undeniably Scottish” and “Kiddo”. Ziegler is serving as the director for “Unfortunately, Unbearably, Undeniably Scottish,” and Zach Lopez, a senior musical theatre major, is directing “Kiddo.”

“In both one-acts, I wanted family relationships to be center stage – pun always intended,” said Ziegler. “But family dynamics inevitably evolve over time as age, distance, and personal principles become factors. ‘Kiddo’ represents my contemplative thoughts on the subject, while ‘Unfortunately, Unbearably, Undeniably Scottish’ represents my humorous conclusions.”

Em de Zafra, a senior theatre studies major, also has an original work as part of the Ron L. Moyer One-Act Festival. Her play, produced in association with the Student Theatre Cooperative, is titled “Best Friends 4 Ever.”

“‘Best Friends 4 Ever’ is a story about three friends and how their friendships grow and change in the wake of a traumatic event,” said de Zafra. “Traveling in a non-linear timeline, Casey must process the events of an attack and what she believes a friend is capable of doing.”

Ryan Bernier, a first-year master’s directing student, will have his USD debut in directing “The Inexplicable Chaos Factor of Mia Gregory” written by Emily Hageman, a Sioux City playwright.

“'The Inexplicable Chaos Factor of Mia Gregory’ is a coming-of-age story that blends comedy, drama, and heart,” said Bernier. “It compellingly illustrates the inexplicable chaos of humanity. I was drawn to this play for its wicked, dumb silliness and beautiful emotional complexity.”

Performances are scheduled for 7:30 p.m. on Friday, March 22, and Saturday, March 23, and 2 p.m. on Sunday, March 24. Tickets are on sale now and can be purchased from the USD Theatre website. Check out USD Theatre on Facebook and Instagram for interviews, videos, photos and more.
