USD to Celebrate Accessibility Awareness Day April 10
USD’s Accessibility Awareness Day event is an educational and outreach event focused on digital access and inclusion for the many students who live with disabilities or learning variability.
“The purpose of this event is to get everyone talking, thinking and learning about equal access for web, software, mobile and more, and learner variability on our campus,” said Angela Jackson, Ed.D., USD digital accessibility coordinator. “Accessibility Awareness Day showcases and celebrates how people with disabilities and learning variability navigate their environment with the use of assistive technology to improve their learning and access to their environment and course materials.”
Accessibility Awareness Day will feature a student panel, keynote speakers, presentations, food, games and prizes, a chance to win USD swag and more. The schedule of events is as follows.
- 11 a.m. – Keynote speakers (Jackson; Brett Cosby, Dakotalink; representative from SD Vocational Rehabilitation)
- 11:30 a.m. – Student panel
- Noon – Lunch
- 12:30 p.m. – Q&A session with technology experts (Jackson; Cosby; Danielle Loftus, University Libraries)
- 1-2 p.m. – Live demonstrations of assistive and adaptive technology, virtual reality, and artificial intelligence tools that help with learning, understanding, interaction and comprehension of digital content
Accessibility Awareness Day is hosted by the Office of Disability Services, University Libraries, Center for Teaching & Learning/Office of Digital Accessibility, Department of Communication Sciences & Disorders, Office of Multicultural Affairs, Opportunity Center, Campus Activities Board (CAB), Dakotalink Sioux Falls and SD Vocational Rehabilitation out of Yankton, South Dakota.
