Bertsch, who earned a Ph.D. in biomedical engineering from USD, has been a faculty member in the Department of Entrepreneurship, Management & Marketing since July 2018. This is the first time he has won the award.

We asked Bertsch about his research and more. This is what he had to say.

How did it feel to win this award?

This award was a real honor and a surprise. Particularly since there are so many worthy research projects going on among the Beacom School faculty. The research I do is a bit outside the lines of typical business school focus, so it’s definitely gratifying to be recognized in this way.

What research have you performed over the past year(s)?

My background is in biomedical engineering which is where my entrepreneurship experience also lies. So, my research has focused on commercializing antimicrobial technologies, which basically means materials that are self-disinfecting. Last year, our team published an article describing work we had done to create a wound dressing that fights infections. We’re also working on commercializing paints and coatings that kill bacteria and viruses on-contact. Some of this technology is being developed here at USD in the Department of Biomedical Engineering.

What do you enjoy most about working at Beacom?

Definitely the students. We have the best group of students here at the Beacom School of Business with amazing ideas. It’s so satisfying to watch them mature and develop their business skills and entrepreneurship skills. I also enjoy my faculty colleagues. They all care so much.

What courses did you teach this most recent academic year?

Last fall I taught courses in Market Opportunity Analysis (ENTR 350) and Creativity, Innovation, and Entrepreneurial Thinking (ENTR 330). Then in the spring, I taught New Venture Planning (ENTR 481) and New Product Development (MKTG 772). I also taught courses on the Sioux Falls campus including Business Policy and Strategy (BADM 482) and another section of Market Opportunity Analysis (ENTR 350).
