This initiative aims to bring together leading researchers from nine Established Program to Stimulate Competitive Research (EPSCoR) jurisdictions—South Dakota, North Dakota, Wyoming, Iowa, New Mexico, Nebraska, Oklahoma, Kansas and Montana—with world-class experts in artificial intelligence (AI), engineering, materials science, physical science and data science.

The Great Plains region, characterized by its expansive prairies and rich agricultural heritage, faces significant challenges including economic fluctuations, limited access to resources and the growing impacts of climate change. These challenges present unique opportunities for innovation, particularly through AI-powered materials research.

By leveraging advanced algorithms and data analytics, workshop participants will address critical issues such as sustainable agriculture, renewable energy and environmental conservation.

The workshop aims to establish a world-class, data-driven research platform focused on the application of AI in designing high-performance materials. This platform is expected to tackle pressing societal challenges, including global food shortages and climate emergencies.

By fostering educational opportunities and attracting young scientists to EPSCoR jurisdictions, USD’s leadership will stimulate economic development and support local industries, including clean energy, semiconductor materials, biotech and sensor innovation.

Participants will engage in interactive sessions, hands-on seminars and collaborative projects designed to develop robust methodologies and frameworks for accelerating innovation in materials science.

Additionally, the workshop will facilitate the commercialization of translational technologies, providing significant benefits to multiple projects and fostering collaboration among diverse consortium partners.

This initiative not only highlights USD’s leadership in AI and materials science but also underscores the importance of interdisciplinary collaboration in addressing global challenges through cutting-edge research and innovation.
