John A. Day Gallery to Present ‘In Her Material Realm’ on July 7

This exhibition showcases installation and mixed media works incorporating cast paper, found furniture, natural materials, stitching, beading and other techniques.
These evocative works are an expression of Heggestad’s evolving concerns with issues of gender, violence, bodily experience of the world and storytelling. Through them, she reclaims and reimagines the material world through a distinctly personal and powerful lens, drawing viewers into a realm shaped by texture, memory and presence.
"Plants urgently need to become the focus of our modern myths,” said Heggestad. “Despite the temptation to collapse under the grief over our constant destruction of the natural world, the act of making helps in countering the illusion of separation."
Heggestad has been a long-serving and very active member of the Vermillion and greater South Dakota arts community. She earned her Bachelor of Fine Arts in printmaking from USD and a Master of Fine Arts in printmaking from the University at Buffalo, State University of New York, in Buffalo, New York. She later completed a Clinical Practice Intensive in Arts in Healthcare from the University at Buffalo. She has taught a range of courses at the university level and for the broader community.
A public reception will be held on Sunday, July 20, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., which is free and open to the public. Attendees will have the opportunity to meet the artist and engage with the creative process behind the work.
