USD Theatre Presents ‘Bright Star’
“Bright Star” takes the audience to the hills of Appalachia in the 1920s and 1940s. Based on an unbelievable but true story, the musical follows the interconnected lives of Alice, the spirited editor of a literary magazine, and Billy, a soldier returning from World War II. Set in the Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina, this show is a sweeping tale of hope, resilience and the extraordinary power of the human spirit. This is a story that uplifts, inspires and celebrates the beautiful possibility of starting again.
Martin’s beautiful story is woven together with a folk and bluegrass score composed by Brickell that is sure to have the audience tapping their toes on their way out of the theatre. For those who love stories that celebrate the human spirit, breathtaking harmonies and a good cry followed by a big smile, “Bright Star” is a can’t-miss show.
Directing this production is Matt Nesmith, MFA, associate professor of theatre and coordinator of USD’s musical theatre program. Nesmith’s recent USD theatrical credits include but aren’t limited to “Company” (2025) and “Tick…Tick…BOOM!” (2023).
“This show is filled with so much heart, and the entire cast is bringing so much love, life and joy into this production,” said Logan Culhane, who is studying musical theatre at USD and will be portraying the story’s spritely heroin. “It will make you laugh, cry and think. You won’t be the same after seeing it—you don’t want to miss it.
