Thompson Named Program Director for Department of Addiction Counseling & Prevention

In his new role at USD, Thompson will advise and counsel students, help grow the program and ensure faculty and student engagement in the interprofessional education, research and service mission of the School of Health Sciences. In addition, in the spring 2024 semester he will teach courses in History & Culture of Addiction and Fundamental Skills of Group Counseling for Addiction.
Thompson spent the last several years at the University of Sioux Falls as assistant professor and director of its social work program. He also currently has a private counseling practice focusing on individuals with co-occurring mental health and substance use disorders.
“I love working with clients in active addiction or recovery and accompanying them on their journeys,” Thompson said. “I also love the classroom experience and helping students become confident, competent professionals. It is a privilege to watch students as they learn how to impact lives.
School of Health Sciences Dean Haifa Abou Samra, Ph.D., said, “Thompson’s experience in mental health and substance abuse and treatment make him a great choice for this role."
Thompson is currently pursuing a Doctor of Social Work degree and will begin work with the ACP department on Dec. 18, 2023
