With a passing threshold of 600, the Class of 2026 performed exceptionally well, as more than half of the class earned a score between 700 and 800. One USD Doctor of Physical Therapy graduate achieved the highest possible score of 800—an extremely rare achievement that reflects the remarkable preparation and ability the program instills in its students.

“I credit our students for their unwavering dedication and the way they consistently lift one another up,” said Patti Berg-Poppe, Ph.D., chair and professor in the Department of Physical Therapy. “For three years they leaned into the hard work, including 136 credit hours of rigorous academic expectations. They not only met those demands, but they surpassed them. I also credit an exceptional team of faculty who believe deeply in our profession and in the tremendous potential of our students. Their commitment to excellence, compassion and hard work sets the tone for everything we do.”

As an accredited program, the DPT curriculum is thoroughly examined. Core faculty continuously evaluate strengths and opportunities, in addition to seeking ongoing feedback from students and graduates and providing intentional support when students are experiencing challenges or recognition when they are excelling.

“We benefit from an excellent faculty-to-student ratio, and students regularly stop in for clarification or assistance in our dedicated space,” said Berg-Poppe. “We are deeply invested in one another’s success, and we work hard to ensure our students have every resource they need to thrive in the career path they’ve chosen.”

With its students’ success on the National Physical Therapy Exam, USD's DPT program joins a small number of programs nationwide to demonstrate this level of student preparation and excellence. The national first-time pass rate for 2026 is 90.5% compared to USD’s 100%.

“This achievement highlights what makes our program special: students who are deeply supported, challenged and prepared for success by dedicated faculty,” said Jessica Messersmith, Ph.D., interim dean of the School of Health Sciences. “A 100% pass rate underscores that our graduates leave USD not only ready to provide high-quality care but also to lead and serve in the communities they call home.”
