The University of South Dakota School of Health Sciences will add a radiologic technology specialization available with its Bachelor of Science in health sciences degree starting in January 2026.

This will be achieved through contractual arrangements with Avera McKennan Hospital and University Health Center School of Radiologic Technology (Sioux Falls), Sanford Medical Center School of Radiologic Technology (Sioux Falls) and Avera Sacred Heart Hospital School of Radiologic Technology (Yankton).

Once admitted into one of these competitive programs, students may enroll in the USD radiologic technology specialization. Students in the specialization will be dual enrolled, allowing them to benefit from all the support and services USD has to offer during the clinical phase of their program.

USD’s core courses in the B.S. in health sciences program prepare students for the field by exploring essential topics such as communication with patients, medical ethics and law, patient safety and culturally competent care. The specialization is designed to align with the clinical phase and requires 48 credits. Students may apply to the hospital-based radiologic technology program while enrolled at USD. Admission is not guaranteed, as placements in cohorts are competitive.

“Radiologic technologists are in high demand, with many employers offering sign-on bonuses. We are excited to enhance our partnerships to offer this specialization,” said Amy Nelson, Ph.D., OTD, director of the health sciences program. “As the profession grows, students may prefer the B.S. degree over the two-year degree because it provides them with a strong foundation in health care and may open doors for leadership roles. This is an excellent opportunity for students as well as a significant contribution to workforce needs.”
