Dr. Timothy J. Campbell is Associate Professor of Music at the University of South Dakota, where he conducts the Symphonic Choir and Collegium Musicum and teaches courses in choral literature, sight-singing, and conducting. He also serves as Chorus Director of the South Dakota Symphony Orchestra, hailed by The New Yorker’s Alex Ross as “one of America’s boldest orchestras.” His preparation of the SDSO Chorus for the world-premiere recording of Douglas Moore’s Pulitzer Prize-winning opera Giants in the Earth earned praise from Opera News, which noted that the chorus “acquits itself superbly.”
A Sioux Falls native and passionate advocate for the development of vocal arts in South Dakota, Dr. Campbell founded the vocal ensemble Transept in 2016. Winner of The American Prize in Choral Performance, Transept brings together some of the finest professional consort singers in the nation with select musicians in the region. Transept has been praised as “truly breathtaking” by Choral Journal and described by composer Wayne Oquin of The Juilliard School as “the choral art form at its finest.”
As a professional ensemble tenor, Dr. Campbell has performed with some of the finest vocal ensembles in the nation, including the GRAMMY®-winning ensembles Conspirare and the Houston Chamber Choir, as well as The Rose Ensemble, VocalEssence, The Singers, the South Dakota Chorale, and Kinnara. He has appeared at Carnegie Hall and Avery Fisher Hall with Conspirare and toured Europe with The Rose Ensemble, winner of first prize at the Tolosa International Choral Competition.
Dr. Campbell holds degrees from Bemidji State University, the University of Minnesota, and the University of Arizona.
