As I CARE coordinator, Simmons will collaborate with the Coordinated Community Response Team, made up of USD faculty and staff, and Vermillion community members to create and implement programming and sexual assault prevention education opportunities to students, provide advocacy for victims of sexual assault and assess areas of need in the community, programs and in USD policy.

Simmons previously worked in Sioux City as a mental health therapist. She received her Master’s degree in social work from the University of Iowa, and completed her advanced practicum Master’s placement at the Rape Victim Advocacy Program in Iowa City. There, Simmons worked for sexual violence advocacy and prevention education in the community and at the university. She earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in psychology and Spanish at Coe College in Cedar Rapids.

“Our commitment is to prevent and respond to sexual assault at USD through programming and advocacy,” Simmons said. “I’m excited about I CARE’s work from the firm foundations that others have built so far.”
