DHSLA is a dynamic program that brings together top law enforcement executives and command-level staff from agencies across the nation for an intensive two-week curriculum focused on crisis leadership and resiliency.

"Being selected for the DHS Leadership Academy is an honor, and I am thankful for the support that made this opportunity possible,” said Sangster. “I hope to use this experience to continue growing as a leader, strengthening the work the police department does at USD."

During the academy, DHSLA attendees learn from subject-matter experts in the areas of how to lead through crisis, resiliency and other contemporary law enforcement topics. Participants will also collaborate in groups to discuss and develop proposed solutions to common challenges facing law enforcement.

Since its inaugural class in 2015, the academy has been a cornerstone in developing the next generation of state and local law enforcement leaders.

USD Chief of Police Bryant Jackson, Ed.D. '23, attended the DHSLA in 2024.
