Mediger credited her parents, particularly her mother Robin ’97 who taught kindergarten in the Sioux Falls area for 20 years, for instilling in her a desire to teach. Ryan ’96 and Robin Mediger are both USD graduates.

“I’ve always known I wanted be a teacher,” said Mediger. “My mom is a kindergarten teacher so I’ve been exposed to it my entire life.”

The recipient of the Jonette “Joni” and Robert “Bid” Miller Scholarship Endowment must satisfy a number of criteria including being in the top 25 percent of their high school graduating class and must hold a desire to live and teach elementary education in South Dakota after graduation.

Mediger said she appreciated the financial assistance as well as the recognition from the scholarship.

“Any scholarship takes a load off financially but it also said I did enough work in high school,” said Mediger. “It was a pat on the back and it felt good to be rewarded.”
