Moen to Deliver Lifto Amundson Lecture
Matthew C. Moen, former dean of the College of Arts and Sciences will deliver the 29th annual Lifto Amundson Lecture at 4 p.m. Moen, recently retired from USD, is the President of the Gettysburg Foundation in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. Moen will speak on “The Great Task Remaining Before Us," a discourse on liberal education and citizenship. After his lecture, Alpha Chapter of Phi Beta Kappa will initiate new members to the honor society, followed by a reception.
Moen served as Dean of the College of Arts & Sciences, Lohre Distinguished Professor, and Professor of Political Science at USD from 2002-2017. Previously, he was the professor/chair of the Department of Political Science at the University of Maine and special assistant to the president and University of Maine System Trustee Professor. While at USD, Moen was appointed by Governor Dennis Daugaard to chair the South Dakota Humanities Council. He has also served as President of the Council of Colleges of Arts & Sciences, a national arts and sciences dean’s organization, as chair of the Professional Ethics Committee for the American Political Science Association and as President of the New England Political Science Association.
The Gettysburg Foundation’s preservation mission includes the funding and operation of the Gettysburg National Military Park Museum and Visitor Center; land, monument and artifact preservation; battlefield rehabilitation; with a major focus on leadership and civic education.
The Lifto Amundson Lecture was established in 1988 by Marjorie Lifto Amundson and her son, Dr. Loren H. Amundson of Sioux Falls. Mrs. Amundson was a member of USD’s Alpha Chapter of Phi Beta Kappa. Loren Amundson (USD School of Medicine, 1954; Distinguished Alumni Award, 2004) was also elected to membership in the chapter. The Lifto Amundson Lectureship has enabled distinguished speakers from the liberal arts disciplines to visit USD each year and share their research and perspectives with the community.
