Renowned AfroLatina slam poet Elizabeth Acevedo Presents at USD
Acevedo’s full day residency will begin with a lecture titled “Race and Civility” followed by a writing workshop at 3 p.m. She will headline a slam poetry feature at 7 p.m. in the Muenster University Center.
“The various events are based on Ms. Acevedo’s spoken-word texts which examine race relations and cultural divides, especially with respect to multi-heritage and multicultural populations,” said Laura Vidler, chair of modern languages. “This project fosters both literary and civic engagement in that it brings nationally recognized humanities programming to the people of South Dakota, celebrates literature, and promotes civil conversation about the concepts of identity and social justice.”
All events are open to the public. Acevedo’s visit is co-sponsored by the USD departments of Modern Languages and Linguistics, English, Communication Studies, the program of Women, Gender and Sexuality Studies and the Center for Diversity and Community as well as the South Dakota Humanities Council and National Endowment for the Humanities.
