The AERA Annual Meeting provides a forum for researchers to explore and discuss the latest educational research across the nation. This year’s theme is "Knowledge to Action: Achieving the Promise of Equal Educational Opportunity."

During the paper session, Nicholas Shudak, Ph.D., and Ayana Campoli, Ed.D., will offer a presentation titled “The Challenges of Teaching Teacher Candidates to Actively Engage K-12 Students During a Yearlong Residency Experience.”

“One of the more recent trends in teacher preparation focuses on practice-based preparation programs. In this presentation, we explore our teacher education program’s efforts toward a more culturally responsive and practice-based curriculum,” said Shudak. “For us, it is increasingly becoming an issue of social justice and how to rethink and shift the paradigm of student teaching with our partners, giving K12 students greater and more equitable access to effective teaching while also reducing the student-teacher ratio.”

Derrick Robinson, Ph.D., will also present at the conference. The title of his presentation is “Speaking in Their Names: The Phenomenon of Urban Teacher Educator Effectiveness.”

The Annual Meeting of AERA is the largest conference of its kind, typically hosting thousands of presentations by both exemplary and emerging scholars. In addition to sharing their research, the USD faculty members will have the opportunity to learn about the latest research on teacher education conducted by scholars from around the world. Shudak, Campoli and Robinson expressed their gratitude for the opportunity to attend the event.

“We are grateful to USD's Center for Teaching and Learning and the School of Education Dean's Office which sponsored travel grants for us to present in San Antonio,” said Shudak.
