Scott Stern Awarded Beacom School of Business Distinguished Service Award at 73rd Annual Banquet
Stern is the owner and CEO of Stern Oil Company. He received his B.S. in Business Administration from USD in 1983 and is currently working on his MBA. He started his career in the family business and then moved to Phoenix, Arizona, to manage a region for a division of Suncor Energy on the west coast. In 2016, he was appointed the commissioner of the Governor’s Office of Economic Development in the Governor Daugaard administration.
“Scott Stern has been an incredibly dedicated member of the Beacom School of Business and the Dean’s Advisory Board,” said Venky Venkatachalam, Ph.D., dean of the USD Beacom School of Business. “He provides great leadership and concepts for our school and is always dedicated to seeing our students thrive. He is currently working on his MBA that he started many years ago. This is proof that he follows through on something he has started. Scott is already a successful business man, but he understands there is always room to learn and grow. He is very deserving of the Beacom Distinguished Service Award and a great representation of our alumni.”
In 2019 Stern purchased the family business from his parents. He is also the chairman of CoAxis Energy, a liquefied natural gas distribution, service and supply company. Stern currently serves on several boards, including the South Dakota Retailers Association, the South Dakota Petroleum and Propane Marketers Association, USD Beacom School of Business Advisory Board and is chairman of the South Dakota Workers’ Compensation Advisory Council. Stern and his wife Staci, also a USD graduate, live in Sioux Falls and have three married daughters and three grandchildren with a fourth on the way.
The Beacom Distinguished Service Award is given annually to a leader in the business community who represents the values and commitment to service that the Beacom School of Business upholds in its curriculum.
