“We are proud to use the USD campus as a hub for professional development and collaboration among law enforcement agencies,” said Bryant Jackson, Ed.D., chief of police. “These training opportunities not only benefit our department, but also help build stronger partnerships and prepare officers to respond to the evolving challenges facing public safety today.”

UPD hosts approximately five training events a year for regional law enforcement officers.  The upcoming trainings will cover topics like crises, behavioral threat assessment, response to digital evidence and more.

“Hosting advanced law enforcement training at USD allows our officers and regional partners to learn together, strengthen professional relationships and bring the latest best practices back to the communities we serve,” said Jackson. “Investing in high-quality training is one of the most important ways we can continue to enhance public safety across our region.”

From May 11 to 15, UPD held the first training, which covered the National Tactical Officers Association Basic Crisis Negotiations course. This course brought together law enforcement professionals from agencies across the region to strengthen communication, de-escalation and crisis response skills. The training was made possible through support from the Collaborative Reform Initiative Technical Assistance Center and the COPS Office within the U.S. Department of Justice.

Upcoming trainings include:

May 19 - U.S. Secret Service National Threat Assessment Center

UPD is hosting the U.S. Secret Service National Threat Assessment Center for a presentation on behavioral threat assessment. The USSS and the NTAC are nationally recognized leaders in behavioral threat assessment research and training, focused on preventing targeted violence through the identification and management of concerning behaviors to assist schools, workplaces, law enforcement agencies and other organizations in establishing multidisciplinary threat assessment programs.

June 23 to 26 - Department of Homeland Security Federal Law Enforcement Training Centers

UPD is hosting the DHS Federal Law Enforcement Training Centers for a course on response to digital evidence. This course prepares law enforcement officers and investigators to recognize, safely handle and preserve digital evidence that may be encountered during criminal investigations. The training provides practical, easy-to-understand instruction on today’s technology and helps first responders take the proper steps to protect important electronic evidence such as computers, phones and other digital devices.

July 20 to 22 - Science-based Interviewing and Interrogation Course

UPD is hosting a science-based interviewing and interrogation course. This course provides law enforcement professionals with modern, research-driven techniques for conducting effective and ethical interviews. The training focuses on communication skills, understanding human behavior and building rapport to help investigators gather accurate information and improve investigative outcomes.

There is no cost for regional law enforcement officers to attend.
