USD Employees Enhance Skills Through Leadership South Dakota

Leadership South Dakota, which launched in 2014, provides citizens around the state with the background, unique experiences and insights necessary to assume leadership positions at the community, state and national levels.
The immersive experience spans six or seven sessions, each focusing on a theme relevant to South Dakota. Guest speakers, tours, activities and lessons are all part of the sessions, giving participants a unique and profound experience.
Matt participated in Leadership South Dakota in 2016 when she was just 24 years old and new to the professional world.
“Leadership South Dakota was a chance to deepen my understanding and expand my network. I’ve always valued opportunities to learn more and build relationships with leaders. I love South Dakota, and I’m thrilled to live here,” Matt said.
Ulrich just recently participated in the 2024-2025 cohort.
“The organizational values of ‘discover, connect, do,’ really reflect our experience in the program,” she said. “We are discovering the talent, industries and hidden gems across the area, connecting with them and our class and ultimately using this experience to improve our communities and take meaningful action so we can put this amazing experience to use.”
A Noteworthy Experience
Experiences within Leadership South Dakota are nothing short of noteworthy, as they give participants insight into different businesses, communities and cultures across the state.
For Matt, the most impactful session included a visit to the Pine Ridge Reservation, where her Leadership South Dakota class engaged with tribal leaders, residents and students, learning about the inspiring initiatives and challenges of the reservation.
“I remember leaving that session feeling a deep responsibility to support the communities within our state. Even nine years later, it’s difficult to put into words how powerful that experience was,” Matt said.
Ulrich said her most memorable experience was the group’s trip to Rapid City.
“The trip had such a variety of content from the Sanford Underground Research Facility to Deadwood, and we saw the variety of industries and attractions we have throughout the state,” said Ulrich.
The engagement within Leadership South Dakota doesn’t stop there, as many classmates maintain contact well beyond spring graduation.
“Many of my classmates have become professional connections. I’m so proud to be part of a group that is committed to making a positive impact wherever we can, however that may look,” said Matt.
Empowering Coyotes to Lead
Empowering Coyotes to lead is an investment USD takes to heart, as the university encourages staff and faculty to get involved in programs like Leadership South Dakota to further foster growth and connection statewide.
For both Matt and Ulrich, Leadership South Dakota has been more than just a professional development opportunity – it has been a chance to grow, connect and bring new perspectives back to the university, in addition to shaping a stronger, more connected South Dakota.
“I’ve been incredibly fortunate in my professional journey to have mentors and supporters who have championed me. USD’s participation in Leadership South Dakota reflects the mission of developing leaders who will shape the future of our communities,” said Matt.
Ulrich also applauds the university and its commitment to encouraging employees to pursue meaningful professional development opportunities.
“I have been so fortunate to receive support from USD and Knudson School of Law Dean Neil Fulton to continue my professional development within USD and also off campus,” said Ulrich. “We are better for the experiences and connections we have, so I am very grateful to have the support of USD to spend time each month immersing myself in communities and meeting some of the best leaders — many of whom are now friends. This experience will no doubt benefit USD through connections and knowledge that I am gaining, and I am incredibly appreciative to have the opportunity to participate.”
