This impressive ranking is the result of innovative and highly successful programs aimed specifically at introducing USD medical students to rural practice.

“Our mission includes educating South Dakotans to serve all parts of our state,” said Dr. Tim Ridgway, dean of the medical school. “This ranking is a reflection of the dedication and commitment our faculty and partners throughout the state have in providing quality rural experiences for our students.”

Founded in 1907, USD’s medical school enrolls approximately 65 to 70 students each year and offers eight different residencies for post-graduate medical training. About 90% of the school’s students are graduates of a South Dakota high school, and the remaining students have a family connection to South Dakota.

The 2021 graduation ceremony for USD’s medical school occurs May 7 and will include 67 new physicians.
