USD Welcomes First International Counselor Delegation

“This was the first time the University of South Dakota has ever hosted a delegation of international high school counselors, and to my knowledge, the first time among any South Dakota Board of Regents institutions,” said Patrick Morrison, J.D., director of the Gallagher International Center. “These familiarization tours are one of the key ways for us to showcase USD and the state more broadly as a destination for their students to study the world.”
Ten counselors and two Educational Programs (EdPrograms) staff members representing eight countries visited both the Vermillion and Sioux Falls campuses, gaining valuable insights into the university's academic offerings and student life. The counselors' visit included tours of both campuses, presentations on academic programs, and opportunities to interact with USD faculty, staff and current students.
“Our ability to showcase our Sioux Falls and Vermillion campuses and their respective communities will go a long way to ensuring that we make a memorable impression, hopefully facilitating further international mobility to USD from their respective institutions,” said Morrison.
Counselors were particularly impressed by the strong sense of community on both campuses and the positive experiences of current and incoming international students.
“It was really gratifying to hear them talk about the sense of community that they felt on our campuses, the friendliness of the individuals they interacted with and the great return on investment a degree from USD will provide their students,” said Morrison.
Godfrey Otaka from the Nova Pioneer School in Kenya specifically acknowledged the meaningful hands-on opportunities provided to students at USD.
“We visited the school of biomedical engineering and we got to see the good work they are doing with students and how they expose them to internships,” said Otaka.
Led by EdPrograms, an organization that promotes international education through short-term immersion programs and university visits, the delegation’s visit to USD kicked off a 12-university recruitment tour to institutions across Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, and South Dakota, with USD being the sole stop in South Dakota.
