USD Welcomes Yiddish Composer Netsky
“We are delighted to have a scholar of Dr. Netsky’s reputation speaking at USD. This represents a unique opportunity for our campus and our community to learn more about Yiddish culture, and how important music and art were to the Jews of Central and Eastern Europe,” said Bruce Kelly, Director at the Center for Teaching and Learning.
The lecture, part of USD’s semester-long celebration of Yiddish arts, culture and history, will focus on the musical “Green Violin” and the Marc Chagall painting for which it is named. The event is hosted by the South Dakota Humanities Council and the combined efforts of the College of Fine Arts, the Department of Theatre, the Center for Diversity & Community, and the Center for Teaching and Learning.
“It is an honor to host Dr. Netzky at USD as part of our campus-wide celebration of Yiddish arts, culture and history,” said Chaya Gordon-Bland, Associate Professor of Theatre. “Based on Dr. Netzky’s incredible experience, artistry, and expertise in klezmer music, this event promises to be a joy and an inspiration!”
USD’s semester-long celebration of Yiddish arts, culture and history will culminate in the regional premiere of the musical “Green Violin” on April 19-23.
