USD's Leaders of Social Change Recognized by Sioux City Nonprofit

Crittenton Center is a nonprofit organization out of Sioux City, Iowa, that specializes in child and family development and child welfare and well-being. Each month, the organization honors a community partner that has given time, talent and resources in support of the center’s mission.
"It’s a great honor to be recognized as a top contributor to serving this community partner,” said April Lee, assistant director of service learning and community engagement at USD. “The Crittenton Center is vitally important for the Office of Serving Learning and our students, as the center provides diverse volunteering opportunities and employment options all under one partner. With multiple locations, it also provides a broad spectrum of resources for families and community members.”
LSC-LLC students have engaged in several volunteer opportunities through the Crittenton Center, including spending a day with children waiting for foster care at the emergency center and traveling to Le Mars, Iowa, to paint and clean the center’s new daycare and preschool.
Throughout April and March, the Office of Service Learning has several more volunteer trips planned, including visiting the emergency shelter, working at the Crittenton Center’s community carnival event and organizing the center’s giveaway closet at their corporate location.
“Understanding the true meaning of community engagement is a necessity for all graduates – no matter where they land,” said Lee. “Making connections and volunteering with community partners helps our students gain connections for employment and understand what resources are available in the communities they serve.”
“Volunteering is also a direct path to becoming an active citizen who has empathy and considers others when acting – from casting their vote at the ballot box to rolling up their sleeves to serve others,” she continued.
