Alumni Mentoring Program
Connecting students with alumni who’ve walked the same campus halls, faced the same decisions, and turned their college experience into real-world success. Whether you’re looking for long-term guidance or quick career advice, we have you covered.
Real Yotes. Real Advice. Real Support.
The USD Alumni Mentoring Program connects current students with alumni who’ve walked the same path and are eager to support the next generation of Yotes. Whether you’re looking for consistent, long-term guidance or simply want to ask a few specific questions, there are two flexible options designed to meet your needs.
- Matched Mentoring creates duos based on the fit between the mentor’s personal and professional experiences and mentoring interests and your learning and life goals. This is a longer term (~10-15 weeks but can be extended if mentor and mentee desire) relationship during which the pair get to know each other, and the mentor helps you identify and work toward career and personal/professional development goals.
- In the Alumni Network, you can ask mentors specific questions based on your needs and their professional and personal expertise and experiences. You might ask mentors about how to get into a particular career area, suggestions about moving to the town where they live, what you might negotiate in your first contract, and lots of other things. This is a short-term, sometimes one-and-done interaction, but you can keep coming back and asking questions of the same or other mentors in the Alumni Network.
USD students can participate in one or both programs – at the same time if you want!

Why join the USD Alumni Mentoring Program?
Alumni mentors offer you unique advantages that come from walking the same path:
- They know what it’s like to be a Yote. Alumni understand USD’s culture, opportunities you may have, and the challenges you face. Mentors can suggest helpful courses, research opportunities and resources. They can give relevant advice about balancing academics and activities, dealing with campus issues, and preparing for life after graduation.
- They're proof it works. Alumni mentors show you that your degree can lead to real success. They can share concrete examples of how their college experience translated into their career, giving you a practical roadmap instead of generic advice.
- Support during transition from USD to the workplace. The early career transition can be overwhelming. Mentors offer encouragement and perspective as you prepare for post-grad professional life. They can provide focused advice on things like first job decisions, early skill development, and making a good impression.
- Powerful built-in network. Alumni stay connected with other graduates, opening doors to internships, jobs and professional contacts. Mentors can introduce you to key contacts relevant to your immediate goals and valuable for specific job searches or industry entry.
- Immediate industry insights. Mentors share relevant knowledge about current industry trends and entry-level opportunities, helping you get oriented quickly in your field. They can provide guidance on choosing between job offers, negotiating your first salary, or deciding on immediate next steps after graduation.
- They actually care. Alumni often feel genuinely invested in helping current students succeed. They remember what it was like and want to give back, leading to more committed mentoring relationships.
