Kylie Parisien smiling.Parisien was one of only 60 undergraduate students to be selected for the competitive scholarship program.

“Being selected for this scholarship is an honor since it’s a very competitive scholarship,” said Parisien, who is affiliated with the Turtle Mountain Band of Chippewa. “It gives me an opportunity to represent my culture and show people from my reservation that anything is possible with hard work and determination.”

In addition to a monetary award, the scholarship also provides recipients with a trip where they will participate in career-building activities, including a keynote speaker, career development workshop and a scholarship and donor recognition reception. Parisien will travel to Minneapolis, Minnesota, in late May.

“The career development opportunities that this scholarship provides to recipients will allow me to network with people across the country, gain knowledge about my desired profession and grow as a business professional,” said Parisien.

Parisien is majoring in marketing and minoring in media & journalism. On campus, she's involved in Pi Sigma Epsilon, the Wiyuskinyan Unpi Tipi Living Learning Community and Tiospaye Student Council. She credits these organizations and her time at USD for enabling her to gain exposure to leadership opportunities.

“The USD campus, especially the Native American community, allowed me to easily adjust to the college environment, as I live over eight hours away from Vermillion,” said Parisien. “Throughout the different organizations offered on campus, I have been able to gain guidance from different faculty members, develop different personal skills and try new things.”

Upon completing her undergraduate degree, Parisien plans to pursue a marketing or broadcasting career for a college or league sports team.
