Honors Student Accepted to Summer Health Professions Education Program for Underrepresented Students

The program’s goal is to strengthen the academic proficiency and career development of students underrepresented in health professions and prepare them for a successful application and matriculation to health profession schools.
“I am excited to accept this internship because it is nationwide, and I am the first student from USD to be accepted,” Allen said. “I’m passionate about health care, so this acceptance means so much to me.”
The six-week program provides scholars with an interest in medicine, dentistry, nursing and pharmacy with academic enrichment in the basic sciences and math, clinical experiences, career development activities, learning and study skills seminars and a financial planning workshop – all of which are aimed at strengthening students’ research and inquiry skills.
“The teachers and mentors I’ve met at USD have helped me face challenges head on,” Allen said. “USD prepares its students for success, and I believe that it has given me a step up in pursuing my career.”
Allen, a Sioux Falls, South Dakota, native, will finish her undergraduate degree at USD then she plans to attend the USD Sanford School of Medicine and specialize in being a cardiologist.
“I wish to enrich my knowledge in the medical field through this experience,” Allen said. “I’m looking forward to growing within a group setting and building teamwork skills on a diverse team.”
As the nation’s largest philanthropy focused on improving health and health care – the Summer Health Professions Education Program will teach aspiring health professionals to be tomorrow’s change leaders in helping build a culture of health in their communities and the nation.
Today, the program boasts the acceptance of over a thousand scholars – 67.9% being from underrepresented backgrounds.
