Political Science Student Interns with Attorney's Office to Explore a Career in Law

Van Cleave, a rising sophomore from Laurel, Nebraska, is one of the interns for Madison County Attorney Joe Smith. Through this internship, Van Cleave studies current felony cases, which involves reading police reports, watching interviews, listening to jail calls, reviewing statuses, attending hearings, taking notes during depositions and more. She has also been able to sit in on different types of hearings and learn about how court proceedings work.
“This internship has allowed me to see exactly how the courtroom works and learn things from a prosecutors side,” said Van Cleave. “This internship is perfect for me since it’s close to home and the county incudes the city of Norfolk, so I’ve seen some pretty big cases so far.”
In addition, Van Cleave has been able to meet and talk with different professionals within the criminal justice system, including police officers, court reporters, public defenders, defense lawyers and judges. Working alongside these individuals as well as the county attorney has provided Van Cleave with valuable mentorship throughout her time in the office.
“My favorite part is the people I get to work with in the county attorney’s office. Anytime I have a question or problem, I know I can go to any of them for help,” said Van Cleave. “Joe is always good about answering my any questions I have, and it means a lot to me that he is willing to take the time to teach his interns.
“As I move forward in my education, I will be able to take what I’m learning here and apply it to my future classes and activities,” Van Cleave continued.
At USD, Van Cleave is involved in the Honors Program, Political Science League and Lost & Found. She said these experiences, her coursework and guidance from her advisors helped prepare her for this internship.
“USD’s faculty and staff have been great when it comes to the questions I have had,” said Van Cleave. “My advisors helped me decide what was best for me and have even connected me with other students who have similar interests. Because of this, I have been able to talk to students who have done internships and get advice on what to expect.”
Upon completing her undergraduate degree, Van Cleave’s goal is to attend law school. She hopes to try a new internship each summer to build her resume, gain experience and explore different careers. Her internship with the Madison County Courthouse is just the beginning of this journey.
“This internship is my first time exploring a law career up close, so the knowledge I have gained here will help me in my future classes and internships,” said Van Cleave. “It will also help me determine what I want to pursue next.”
