In his talk, titled “An Accidental Journey into the Nonprofit Sector,” Welker said his goal is to break down the misconception that everyone thinks they need to know exactly what they are going to do with their lives professionally. His presentation will explore his personal journey, touch on the reasons to have a career in the nonprofit sector and discuss how his time at USD helped prepare him for the work he does today.

“The nonprofit sector plays a critical role in sustaining healthy communities across the world, and nonprofits provide people with the opportunity to work in nearly every field imaginable, regardless of their background,” Welker said. “Curing cancer and reversing climate trends won’t be accomplished by scientists alone and hopefully my presentation will make the idea of jumping into the sector a little less intimidating."

Welker received his B.S. in sociology and MPA from USD. He has more than a decade of experience in nonprofit leadership roles. For the past five years, he has worked in the affordable housing sector in his role as the executive director at Habitat for Humanity of Greater Sioux Falls. During his time with Habitat for Humanity, he has helped spearhead the habitat’s first affordable housing development in southeast South Dakota while also growing the nonprofit's work in neighborhood revitalization throughout the Sioux Empire.

Welker's presentation will be proceeded by the induction of new members into Alpha Kappa Delta International Sociology Honors Society.

The Orlando Goering Sociology Lecture is an event funded by the Orlando Goering Alpha Kappa Delta Lecture Endowment, an endowment that was created in 2000 by former USD Sociology Professor Orlando Goering.
