Jingyi Li, Ph.D., assistant professor of Asian Studies at Occidental College and a historian of early modern Japanese literature and culture, will serve as the keynote speaker, with her presentation titled, “Celebration of the Decadence: Early Modern Japanese Literati in Popular Prints.”

Li’s research focuses on Japanese popular literature, print culture and cultural identity in the 19th century. Her current book project studies shogakai, calligraphy and painting gatherings of early modern Japan that connected the literati and amateurs to form a popular culture industrial network. She is also interested in book history, digital humanities methods and the education of paleography.

"Professor Li’s keynote brings together several fields of the humanities, particularly book history, digital humanities and cultural history,” said Jeffrey Liu, Ph.D., assistant professor in the Department of History. “Her presence greatly benefits our students by introducing them to an innovative and interdisciplinary model of scholarship, while also demonstrating the exciting collaborative possibilities. I am very pleased that, through the support of the Schell Lecture, East Asian history is gaining a greater visibility at USD.”

The lecture is free and open to the public and will take place at noon in Farber Hall on the USD campus in Vermillion.
