USD to Host 2026 Missouri River Science and Management Symposium
This day-long symposium is an annual event sponsored by the Missouri River Institute at USD, which explores the natural and cultural resources of the river through its focus on research, education and outreach.
The event will begin at 9 a.m. and will focus on the recently published book, “The Missouri, America’s Longest River – A Cultural and Environmental History,” edited by Jon K. Lauck and Harry F. Thompson and published by the Center for Western Studies at Augustana University.
“This year's annual Missouri River Institute symposium is focused on the new book, which covers a wide range of topics, including history, geography, politics, and nature, so anyone curious about broader Missouri River issues will find something of interest,” said David Swanson, Ph.D., professor in the USD Department of Biology and director of the Missouri River Institute.
Authors of the chapters within the book will present a talk on their respective chapter content in-person or via Zoom. Chapters cover broad topics including exploration and explorers, steamboats, historical forts, commerce, nature and the river’s influence on political systems. Copies of the book will be available for purchase.
The event is free and open to the public, and no registration is required. For additional information and a full schedule of events, please visit the symposium’s website.
