'anthropology' by Lauren Gunderson Presented by the USD Theatre Department
Merril will do anything to find her sister Angie’s kidnapper, and she’s comfortable enough with technology to use those tools to her advantage. But how comfortable is too comfortable? This is a play for true crime junkies, early adopters of technology and people who are more than a little unnerved about our future relationship with AI.
Audiences may recognize Gunderson’s name from USD Theater’s 2023 production of “Ada and the Engine,” but this script represents a much darker turn for the award-winning playwright.
Director Riley Harbour is a sophomore MFA student who has previously directed "My Everything" and "Since September," and assistant directed "Bright Star." Kaylee Tveter (who plays Angie) is a sophomore musical theatre major. Her previous credits include Aiden in "Player Two," Sharon in "Stages of Joy," Female Swing in “Gilgamesh,” and Anna in “Frozen Jr.” Gabrielle Ochsner (who plays Merill) is a senior musical theatre major. Her previous credits include Pamela/Margret/Annabella in "The 39 Steps," Margo in "Bright Star," and Mary Bennett/Mr. Bingley in "Pride and Prejudice."
Oshner encourages attendance by acknowledging the show’s timeliness. "AI is growing more and more prevalent in society; ‘anthropology’ confronts the fears AI brings and reinforces what makes humans human, all while showcasing the complexity of grief, family and love.”
