To qualify, singers had to place in the top five of their respective divisions at the regional level and then in the top 15 in the national preliminary round. Singers from across the U.S. and Canada, and from international NATS chapters, were eligible to compete.

Three out of the four USD students, who have advanced to the semifinal round of the National Student Auditions, stand on a stage in front of a grand piano.

The students representing USD are:

  • Clara Norell, ’26 M.M. in vocal performance, from Jackson, Tennessee – Advanced Classical Treble Division
  • Michael Arriaza, rising senior from Schuyler, Nebraska – Upper College Classical Tenor Baritone Bass
  • Trayden Goodman, rising junior from Akron, Iowa – Lower College Classical Tenor Baritone Bass
  • Emma Breugem, rising junior from Hawarden, Iowa – Lower College Musical Theatre Treble

The students will compete in San Antonio, Texas, in early July as part of the NATS national conference. They study with Tracelyn Gesteland, DMA, professor of voice/opera and the Walter A. and Lucy Yoshioka Buhler Endowed Chair.

“Having four singers advance to the NATS National Student Auditions semifinals is a landmark moment for the USD voice area,” said Gesteland. “This is the first time more than two USD singers have reached this level of the competition, and it speaks to the exceptional talent and preparation of our students. As their teacher, I am incredibly proud of them and grateful to witness the artistry and dedication they continue to develop as young performers.”
