Students from North Dakota, South Dakota, Minnesota and Wisconsin submitted performance videos that were evaluated by a panel of judges. Following their success in the regional competition, USD students will compete next in a national preliminary online round, followed by live semifinals and finals in San Antonio, Texas, in July.

The regional placements from USD were:

Advanced Classical Treble

First place (tie): Cadie Logston, graduate student from Jefferson City, Missouri, majoring in vocal performance.

First place (tie): Clara Norell, graduate student from Jackson, Tennessee, majoring in vocal performance.

Third Year Classical Tenor/Baritone/Bass

Second place: Michael Arriaza, junior from Schuyler, Nebraska, majoring in vocal performance and music education.

Second Year Classical Tenor/Baritone/Bass

First place: Trayden Goodman, sophomore from Akron, Iowa, majoring in vocal performance.

First and Second Year Musical Theatre Treble

Third place: Emma Breugem, sophomore from Hawarden, Iowa, majoring in elementary education.

The singers are students of Tracelyn Gesteland, DMA, professor of voice/opera and the Walter A. and Lucy Yoshioka Buhler Endowed Chair.

"I am incredibly proud of these five singers for advancing to the national round of the NATS Auditions,” said Gesteland. “Each of them brings a unique voice and perspective. This honor speaks not only to their talent but also to their hard work, discipline and dedication to becoming the best artists they can be."

The students' collaborative pianist was Jennifer Van Peursem.
