The 61 new doctors, following graduation in May, will move on to the next stage of their training at clinics, hospitals and health care facilities across the nation.

Destinations for USD medical student residencies include 21 states. South Dakota takes the lead with keeping 14 USD medical school graduates in the state. Minnesota and Nebraska will host seven graduates each, while Michigan, Texas, Tennessee, Florida and Wisconsin will host three apiece.

The most popular residency among the Class of 2024 is internal medicine, with 13 graduates pursuing training in that area. Ten will receive training in family medicine; eight in anesthesiology; and four each in emergency medicine, OB/GYN and psychiatry. Two matched to pediatrics and two matched to the internal medicine/pediatrics combined program.

Nationally, a record-high 50,413 applicants registered in the 2024 Main Residency Match from all U.S. medical schools and some international medical schools, vying for 41,503 residency positions in the U.S.
