The annual Faculty Excellence Awards celebrate the dedication, innovation and impact of School of Education faculty whose work advances student learning, strengthens communities and elevates the profession.

“I am proud to recognize this year’s award recipients and their commitment to scholarship, teaching and service that exemplify the mission of the School of Education,” said Amy Schweinle, Ph.D., dean of the School of Education. “Their work makes a meaningful difference for our students, our university and the broader field of education.”

Hyung Suk Yang, Ph.D., assistant professor in kinesiology and sport management, received the Faculty Excellence Award in Research. The research award recognizes faculty who maintain high ratings in annual research evaluations and produce nationally or internationally peer-reviewed publications. Recipients also further the university's research mission, secure funding and share their research through presentations at major conferences, while demonstrating integrity and openness in their work.

Yang’s research focuses on understanding factors that influence human movement, including walking, running and landing, with a particular emphasis on clinical applications and health disparities. Through his work, he contributes to advancements in biomechanics and exercise science while supporting student engagement in research and scholarly activity.

Mejai B. M. Avoseh, Ph.D., professor of adult and higher education, received the Faculty Excellence Award in Service. The service award recognizes faculty who achieve high ratings in annual service evaluations and take on impactful roles in departmental, university, community and professional service activities. Recipients effectively engage in activities that extend beyond the university, support events at various levels and lead student organizations and activities outside the classroom.

Avoseh has demonstrated a longstanding commitment to service at the institutional, national and international levels, including leadership in professional organizations and contributions to global conversations on adult education and citizenship. His work reflects a dedication to fostering globally informed educational practices.

Kelly Knutson, instructor in the School of Education, received the Faculty Excellence Award in Teaching. This award recognizes faculty who receive high ratings in teaching evaluations, demonstrate innovation in their teaching methods and actively engage with students both in and out of the classroom. Recipients also contribute to the professional development of their colleagues and support the mission of their department and university.

Knutson is recognized for her commitment to creating engaging and effective learning experiences, drawing on her extensive background in K–12 physical education. Her teaching emphasizes student engagement, practical application and the connection between physical activity and academic success.
