Mission Statement

The University Police Department is committed to embracing the principals of community policing and working collaboratively with the campus community to create a welcoming, inclusive and safe learning environment at all times. The department is dedicated to continually train with students, faculty and staff to ensure crime prevention and safety measures are in place. We will provide quality police services ethically, fairly and equally in partnership with the members of our community. UPD recognizes the importance of reaching out to marginalized communities and ensuring everyone has a safe and positive experience at USD.

Vision Statement

The University of South Dakota Police Department aspires to provide the highest level of public service for our campus and surrounding community. Our vision is to lead in all areas of professional campus law enforcement practices, to address the safety and security needs of our community effectively and to uphold the mission of the University by supporting an environment in which diverse social, cultural and academic values are free to develop and prosper. This police department shall be:

  • vigilant in protecting both life and property,

  • committed to safeguarding the best interest and well-being of our campus community
