If you have been exposed to COVID-19

Students who think they have been exposed to COVID-19 should call Student Health at 605-677-3700. Student Health will evaluate your exposure and offer guidance. Faculty and staff should contact their health care providers for guidance.

In general, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) guidelines suggest that individuals who have spent 15 minutes or longer within six feet of someone with COVID-19 should quarantine for 14 days following exposure. For more information, see the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s When to Quarantine guide.

Students, faculty and staff in quarantine (either on campus or at home) are encouraged to self-report to the COVID-19 Task Force by sending an email to COVID19@usd.edu. Students who self-report will receive further direction and resources to ensure they are supported during their quarantine period and are able to succeed academically.

If you are wondering if you should quarantine

If you have spent 15 minutes or longer within six feet of a person who tested positive for COVID-19, or if you are sick or have symptoms, you should quarantine while you reach out for medical guidance. Students should contact Student Health at 605-677-3700, and faculty and staff should contact their health care providers. Students, faculty and staff in quarantine/isolation (either on campus or at home) are encouraged to self-report to the COVID-19 Task Force by sending an email to COVID19@usd.edu. Students who self-report will receive further direction and resources to ensure they are supported during their quarantine/isolation period and are able to succeed academically.

If you are a close contact of a person who thinks they may have COVID-19 or who has scheduled a test for COVID-19, you are not yet asked to quarantine. We do ask that you heighten your safety measures (such as washing your hands, wearing a face covering and maintaining distance from others) until your close contact’s test results come back. If your close contact tests positive for COVID-19, please refer to the If You Have Been Exposed to COVID-19 section above and call Student Health or your health care provider.

For more information, consult the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s When to Quarantine guide.

If you are sick or have symptoms

If you are sick or have symptoms of COVID-19, please stay home, stay away from other people and contact Student Health at 605-677-3700. Faculty and staff should contact their health care providers. A health care professional will then provide further direction. Please call ahead before seeking medical care unless you are having trouble breathing or are showing emergency warning signs.

For more information, please consult the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s What to Do If You Are Sick guide.

Students, faculty and staff in isolation (either on campus or at home) are encouraged to self-report to the COVID-19 Task Force by sending an email to COVID19@usd.edu. Students who self-report will receive further direction and resources to ensure they are supported during their isolation period and are able to succeed academically.

If you test positive for COVID-19

Your health care provider and the South Dakota Department of Health will be in contact with you. In general, individuals who test positive for COVID-19 will be expected to isolate for up to 10 days. For guidance on how to successfully isolate, please refer to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s Isolate If You Are Sick resource.

We highly encourage all students, faculty and staff who test positive for COVID-19 to self-report to the COVID-19 Task Force by sending an email to COVID19@usd.edu. Students who self-report will receive further direction and resources to ensure they are supported during their isolation period and are able to succeed academically.
