At-home saliva tests

The South Dakota Department of Health is sponsoring free at-home COVID-19 tests for South Dakota residents and all USD students, regardless of residency. These are simple, convenient saliva tests that you can take from the comfort of your home.

USD expects all students who are taking face-to-face classes at any campus location to get tested for COVID-19. You can get tested at home or once you have arrived on campus. The following students are not expected to get tested:

  • Students who tested positive during the fall semester
  • Students who do not attend face-to-face classes at any USD site
  • Students who have been vaccinated for COVID-19

Students who are eligible for a free saliva test received a personalized link via email; please use this link to request your test through Vault Health, Inc. Results will be delivered to you via email in 48-72 hours.

By taking this simple test soon, you can do your part to #ProtectThePack.

If you are a student who did not receive a personalized link via email and would like to inquire about getting tested, please contact the COVID-19 Task Force at

Faculty and staff who live in South Dakota are also eligible; visit the Vault Health, Inc. website to create an account and request a test.

Drive-thru testing

Free COVID-19 testing is available to USD students, faculty and staff through the USD Sentinel Testing program; drive-thru testing is available Monday-Friday from 2:15-2:30 p.m. Report to the big white tent on the south side of Sanford on Jane St.

If these times do not fit your schedule, testing opportunities are also available through Hy-Vee. Appointments are offered from 8-10 a.m. Monday-Saturday and must be scheduled in advance online.

There may be other drive-thru testing opportunities available near you; visit the South Dakota Department of Health website for more information.

How to self-report

In an effort to keep our campus as safe as possible, we are asking for your help. We urge anyone who tests positive for COVID-19, is experiencing symptoms or has been in close contact with someone who has COVID-19 to self-report by filling out the self-reporting form found here

Why should I self-report?

By notifying the USD COVID-19 Case Management Team of your health status, you are supporting our efforts to monitor the spread of COVID-19 on USD's campus. This self-reporting process also allows us to connect faculty, staff and students with resources they may need. Students who self-report will receive further direction and resources to ensure they are supported during their quarantine/isolation period and are able to succeed academically.

Will my privacy be protected?

The information you share with the Case Management Team will be managed confidentially. We will use the information you provide to contact you and offer direction, and we also provide the South Dakota Department of Health with necessary information. Your case will be added to USD's total numbers on the COVID-19 Dashboard, though we will not connect your name to any data shared with the public. To protect your privacy, the Case Management Team will not notify your classmates. We will contact your professors to ensure you are able to receive academic accommodations, though we will not mention your COVID-19 status.
