Division of Counseling and Psychology in Education Mission Statement

The faculty and staff of the Division of Counseling and Psychology in Education train highly competent professionals seeking to make a difference as community and school mental health counselors, school psychologists, and human development and educational psychology professionals. We foster a community of learners, scholars, educators and advocates who are focused on impacting the lives of children, adolescents and adults. Our training emphasizes competent and ethical practices grounded in rigorous scholarship that is informed by theory and evidence. We value training that is contextualized within social responsibility, self-awareness, diversity and inclusive excellence. We strive to develop future leaders at the forefront of education, mental health, ethics, and research.

Counseling Program Mission Statement

The mission of the counselor education program at the University of South Dakota is to prepare competent, ethical, reflective, and culturally aware professional counselors and counselor educators. Graduates of the counselor education program will possess a strong sense of professional identity, regardless of chosen specialization and demonstrate a commitment to professional and personal development through experiences that promote self-awareness and one's impact on others. Master's and doctoral-level graduates will be prepared for employment as counselors, counselor educators, and clinical supervisors. The counseling program faculty seeks to train leaders who serve diverse populations and the profession, with a special commitment to preparing professional counselors to work in rural settings as counselors, counselor educators, and clinical supervisors.

Human Development and Educational Psychology Program Mission Statement

Our program explores the science of human learning and development. Our courses and majors are designed for students interested in working with children, adolescents, or adults in clinical, educational, or research settings. We offer flexibility in course sequences and course selections and provide accessibility through on-campus and hybrid delivery.
