BBS G-RISE students will have the opportunity to take 2-3 non-STEM graduate courses from the USD Beacom School of Business, School of Law, School of Education and Department of Communication Studies. Classes outside of the biomedical sciences are an innovative approach to provide trainees with knowledge and skills needed for careers outside of academia. These courses can provide a foundation of working knowledge within disciplines such as finance, intellectual property issues, leadership, principles of higher education and communication/journalism skills.  Training can be customized to best fit a student’s career goals in a variety of fields. For example, Business School courses can prepare students for positions in biotechnology, consulting or entrepreneurship. Law School courses prepare students for careers in intellectual property or patent law. Communication courses assist students with skills needed for careers in the science writing or editing fields while Education courses would prepare students for careers in academia including both research and primarily teaching positions.

These skills are not exclusive to the careers listed and many people working in academia would benefit from gaining many of the skills provided by the microcredential courses. These courses will count as electives towards the doctorate degree and do not add to the student’s course load. In addition, they are available as face-to-face courses or online courses, providing considerable flexibility in terms of when these classes can be taken.
