Thanks in a large part to our generous donors, we awarded more than $172,000 in scholarships last year. The departmental scholarships are available for junior and senior students admitted to the nursing major. Eligible students will be contacted towards the end of their spring semester regarding all nursing scholarships open for the next school year. Eligible students will receive an email from their advisors on how to apply for all available nursing scholarships.

Melissa L. and Kevin G. Garry B.S. Scholarship

This scholarship goes to an average student admitted to the USD B.S. nursing program who is in their second, third or fourth year. The recipient must be enrolled in at least 12 credit hours at the Vermillion, Sioux Falls or Rapid City sites. Preference is given to a student with financial need. The scholarship is renewable if the student continues to meet the criteria.

Alice Hobler Starting Over Scholarship

This scholarship is awarded to a student starting their second year in the Rapid City nursing program and starting nursing as a second career.

Holmes-Taylor Scholarship

Candidates for this scholarship must be nursing majors with financial need. First consideration is given to students in the USD Scholars program.

Violet Quinn Hansen Scholarship

The scholarship shall be awarded to students who are pursuing their B.S. in Nursing and who meet all USD requirements to be a student in good standing. Preference will be given to students from South Dakota or Nebraska who are interested in pediatric care upon graduation. If no student meets the criteria, preference will be to the student with the greatest financial need. A student who is a recipient one year is eligible for consideration in any other year.

Carol A. and Arlin L. Houtkooper Scholarship

Students must be pursuing an A.S. in nursing at any USD location. Preference is given to a non-traditional student with financial need.

Doris Erickson Lillibridge Scholarship

Scholarships are given to nursing students planning to pursue rural health care nursing in South Dakota. Preference is given to students from Gregory, Tripp, Jones and Charles Mix counties.

Marian Meyer Memorial Scholarship

This scholarship is awarded to nursing students from the Watertown site. Preference is given to:

  • Single parents
  • Students with financial need
  • Students who graduated from a high school in northeast South Dakota

Recipients must maintain a 3.0 GPA and have exemplary performance in clinicals.

Nursing Department Scholarship Challenge

Gifts are to be used for scholarships to nursing students.

Nursing Memorial Scholarship

This scholarship is awarded to students enrolled in the USD nursing program.

Chuck and Kathy Poore Family Scholarship

Preference is given to students enrolled in the Beacom School of Business or the Department of Nursing.

Rapid City Student Nurses Association Scholarship for Upward Mobility

Students enrolled in the R.N. or B.S.N. nursing program are eligible for this scholarship. Recipients must:

  • Have a 3.0 GPA in the pre-nursing or core nursing courses
  • Have an active South Dakota R.N. license
  • Demonstrate a pattern of community services as an R.N. or nursing student.

Applicants must obtain a recommendation from a current nursing supervisor, if currently employed, or a recent faculty member.

Rosenbaum Scholarship

Preference for this scholarship is given to a graduate of Vermillion High School. Preference is also given to an outgoing candidate with a history of community service and a commitment to the Siouxland area.

Louisa Irene Scott Scholarship

Students enrolled in the Department of Nursing are eligible for this scholarship. Applicants may be considered from students attending outreach sites, including Pierre and Sioux Falls.

Norma Stratton Scholarship

Candidates should be nursing students interested in oncology or hospice care.

Ben T. Suga Scholarship

Students enrolled in or accepted to the USD nursing program are eligible. Students attending classes on the USD campus and departmental outreach sites may be considered. Preference is given to students expressing an interest in a career in psychiatric nursing.

Sharon Taylor Scholarship

This scholarship is available to nursing students.

John T. Vucurevich Nursing Scholarship

Candidates attending Department of Nursing outreach sites will be considered, as well as those attending classes in Vermillion.

John T. Vucurevich Rapid City Nursing Scholarship

This scholarship is available to nursing students enrolled in the Rapid City Nursing Program. Considerations shall be given to students who participate in the JTVF Prosperity Initiative supported programs.

Roanne Weaver Scholarship

Nursing students at the Sioux Falls site are eligible for this scholarship.

Keo Rose Weegar Nursing Scholarship

Nursing students in good standing at USD are eligible for this scholarship. Preference is given to graduates of Parker High School. Recipients engaged in intercollegiate athletics are not eligible.

Orval J. Weegar Nursing Scholarship

Nursing students in good standing at USD are eligible for this scholarship. Preference is given to graduates of Parker High School. Recipients engaged in intercollegiate athletics are not eligible.

Lulu B. Wheeler Scholarship

This scholarship is for students in the healing arts.
