From the Program Director

Joseph FanciulloWelcome to the Internal Medicine Residency Program at the University of South Dakota Sanford School of Medicine. As our program approaches 50 years of training high quality internists, it is my privilege to serve for my seventh year as the program director. We are excited about our educational environment and curriculum. We utilize a 4+2 schedule promoting exceptional well-being, outstanding clinical experience and dedicated time and structure for success in research and scholarship.

Your training will take place at two progressive, tertiary care medical centers totaling over 1,000 patient beds. These systems serve a large geographic area providing you with the challenge of caring for patients with diverse and complex pathology. Our university medical school is just the right size to provide exceptional opportunities to interact with and teach our medical students. The academic medical school blends very well with the community-style practice model leading to an ideal collegial training environment that you will enjoy. We are small enough where you will easily develop close relationships with your peers and faculty yet large enough to pursue any career path. Our graduates commonly match into competitive specialties or continue practice as hospitalists or outpatient primary care doctors, often choosing to practice in South Dakota.

We are continuing to make adjustments to adapt to the COVID-19 pandemic. I have been very proud of how our residents, faculty, and health care teams have prepared and faced these unprecedented circumstances. Fortunately, the impact of COVID-19 in South Dakota has not substantially altered our educational training environment. We feel that we are well prepared to offer a safe, effective and educational environment as the pandemic evolves.

If you are interested in becoming an outstanding internist in a personalized training environment emphasizing education, well-being and intellectual challenges, then I invite you to explore our program further.
