French monk to serve as guest lecturer at USD

VERMILLION, S.D. -- The University of South Dakota will host Brother John, a French monk and a guest lecturer in the World Religions course taught by local pastor Steve Miller, at 12:30 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 21 at the Beacom Hall Auditorium, room 133.

Brother John is part of a Benedictine ecumenical community that was founded in 1940 in the French village of Taize to promote international reconciliation. Approximately 100,000 young people per year travel to Taize to pray, study the Bible and engage in community work with more than 100 brothers.

Brother John's visit to Vermillion is the first formal visit by a Taize brother west of the Mississippi River. A native of Philadelphia, Brother John joined the Taize community in 1974. He is author of eight books on several wide-ranging biblical topics.
